High praise, but given the static nature of rock in the last half of the '90s, it was easy to see why fans and critics eagerly harnessed their hopes to the one great rock band that wanted to push the limits of its creativity, without grandstanding or pandering. Daunting expectations for anyone, even for a band eager to meet them, so it's little wonder that Kid A was so difficult to complete. Radiohead's creative breakthrough arrived when the band embraced electronica -- which was nearly a clich? by the end of the '90s, when everyone from U2 to Rickie Lee Jones dabbled in trip-hop or techno. The difference is that the wholehearted conversion on Kid A fits, since OK Computer had already flirted with electronica and its chilly feel. Plus, instead of simply adding club beats or sonic collage techniques, Radiohead strove for the unsettling \"intelligent techno\" sound of Autechre and Aphex Twin, with skittering beats and stylishly dark sonic surfaces. To their immense credit, Radiohead don't sound like carpetbaggers, because they share the same post-post-modern vantage point as their inspirations. As perhaps befitting an album that's coolly, self-consciously alienating, Kid A takes time to unfold; multiple plays are necessary just to discern the music's form, to get a handle on quiet, drifting, minimally arranged songs with no hooks. Elsewhere, Lowe does get dreamy -- on a lovely version of Boudleaux Bryant's \"Christmas Can't Be Far Away,\" on a cheerful, sparkling take on Ron Sexsmith's \"Hooves on the Roof,\" on a gentle version of Roger Miller's \"Little Toy Trains,\" and on his own originals \"I Was Born in Bethlehem\" and \"A Dollar Short of Happy\" -- but the song that captures the slyly humorous spirit of the whole endeavor is \"Christmas at the Airport,\" where Nick is snowed in at the airport on Christmas day by the \"deep and crisp and evil\" snow. It's funny, it's knowing; it speaks to the other side of Christmas, so it feels like it could be a Christmas perennial, a tart bit of counter-programming in a holiday season that can get too sticky and sweet. Given the excellent singles she recorded for Desco beginning in the late '90s, it seems like she would have gotten the opportunity for a full-length sooner; plus, her brand of raw, heavy, hard-driving funk is such a throwback to the '70s, and she pulls it off so well, that you wonder how she could have escaped that decade without at least a few rare, classic 45s (in the vein of labelmate Lee Fields). It's not hard to believe she once made her living as a prison guard, based on the tough-as-nails, no-nonsense performances she belts out on Dap Dippin' With Sharon Jones \u0026amp; the Dap-Kings, the first full-length release on Desco's descendant, Dap-Tone. Backed by the Dap-Tone house band (a conglomeration of studio pros with connections reaching back to the Desco orbit), Jones delivers a storming set of tunes that would have sounded perfectly at home on the James Brown's Original Funky Divas compilation. The style and quality are pretty consistent all the way through, but it's hard not to single out the nearly unrecognizable cover of Janet Jackson's \"What Have You Done for Me Lately,\" which is transformed into a churning blast of funk full of biting guitars (and nary a synth or drum machine in sight). One has to wonder who could refuse a request so searingly rendered. \"Where Do We Go from Here\" and \"Confusion\" are drenched in urgent, bristling, psychedelic funk, with wah-wah guitars, fuzzed-out bass, and organ. \"Love Bug Blues,\" is a roiling soulful blues. \"You Put the Flame on It,\" with its uplifting interaction between singer and backing chorus, and underscored by horns, weds world-weariness and optimism. \"Hurricane\" finds Bradley flanked by horns and B-3 on one side and his backing chorus on the other. He's testifying to the calamities and darkness in the human heart -- with some wild phase shifting on the instrumental backing. The set ends with \"Through the Storm\" -- it's spiritual soul that could easily be taken as an offering of gratitude to fans. The shimmering guitars, vibes, and slippery, funky snare, frame the horns which in turn accent Bradley's absolute conviction that he's come through the worst.
